A record amount of drugs is seized in the port of Belgium, it is revealed where

Brussels' federal judicial police have seized around 5 tons of cocaine in containers at the port of Antwerp in an investigation into a large-scale drug-trafficking criminal organization.

Local media reports that 8 people were arrested in connection with this event, as being involved in this organization.

"The investigation concerns a criminal organization said to be involved in the import and export of cocaine to Belgium from South and Central America and Canada," says Martin François, from the Brussels public prosecutor's office.

Foreign media, according to initial findings, wrote that the organization was active in the port of Antwerp, especially in facilitating the departure of suspicious containers and providing logistical assistance to other organizations for a fee.

Earlier this month, investigators from the Brussels federal judicial police carried out more than thirty searches in Belgium and the Netherlands.

"During these checks, vehicles, weapons and luxury goods such as clothing, jewelry, bags and watches were seized, as well as around 193,000 euros in cash," said François.

The investigation also resulted in a large seizure of drugs. 4780 tons of cocaine were seized in containers in the port of Antwerp. Meanwhile, eight suspects were arrested by the investigating judge.

"They have been accused of importing and exporting drugs, in society and as members of a criminal organization. The investigation is still ongoing and in the interest of this, the Brussels public prosecutor's office will not make further comments," said François.

Earlier this year, police announced the 'busting' of a major network transporting Latin American cocaine to Europe by boat, in an international operation that included 50 arrests in eight countries.

At the same time, authorities in Paraguay announced the largest cocaine seizure in the country's history after officials were surprised to find more than 4 tons of the drug hidden inside a shipment of sugar bound for Belgium.
