"Drug cartels are filling Europe", Germany raises the alarm: We

Germany and Europe in a "blizzard". According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the global cocaine trade has been flooding the EU area for months due to overproduction in South America (Colombia, Bolivia, Peru). According to BILD, 43 tons of cocaine were confiscated in Germany alone in 2023, twice as much as the year before (20 tons).

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (53, SPD) raises the alarm: "We are declaring war on the drug cartels with maximum investigative pressure. The cocaine flood in Europe is destroying people and generating billions in profits for the cartels."

"We absolutely want to prevent the massive spiral of violence caused by organized crime that we are already seeing in several European countries in Germany," he added.

The three largest ports of cocaine

Ministry strategy: A new tough line!

"We are discovering financial flows. We are dismantling criminal networks. Now we are expanding even more our investigation unit in BKA", she said in an interview for BILD.

The focus of the investigators: "Organized crime influenced by Albanians with its connections to South America".

The most important entry points for cocaine in Germany are three major ports: Antwerp (Belgium), Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Hamburg!

According to the latest figures, more than 218 tonnes of cocaine were seized in the three port countries of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands last year. The investigators estimate that this corresponds to about seven percent of annual global production. One of them says that: "For Germany, we assume that we capture about 30 percent of the imported cocaine."

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser hopes that more checks will be carried out at the ports of the countries of origin (South America) and in Europe! Secret communications from mafia cartels (EncroChat and SkyECC) will also be deciphered.

Port controls now in Peru

Faeser traveled to Peru, Ecuador, Brazil and Colombia earlier in the year and also met EU colleagues in Hamburg in early May for the "port summit".

"With our new collaborations with South American countries, we aim to stop the drug trade before the cocaine reaches our ports. We need fine checks, high vigilance and a strict fight against corruption in all companies at the ports" , Faeser told BILD.

Increased search pressure in northern ports (Hamburg, Rotterdam, Antwerp) is curbing the drug mafia. Smugglers are currently moving to all Spanish ports," she continued.

Mafia conversations decoded

The greatest treasure trove of BKA investigators and their European colleagues:

Decrypted communications data from crypto chats such as Encro-Chat and SkyECC, which drug cartels used for years, are now being used against them.

So far, 3,964 investigations have been launched in Germany and 11.3 tons of drugs have been seized based on EncroChat data alone.

"The decoded communication of the criminals gave us deep insights into the structures. How strongly we act is shown by over 1,700 arrest warrants executed in Germany in EncroChat procedures alone. We will continue to illuminate every corner to stop the cartels and put the perpetrators behind bars ", concluded the minister.

According to security circles, 750 new proceedings have been launched and 482 arrest warrants have been executed in Germany alone using SkyECC data.

The quantities of drugs detected in this case: 33.7 tons of cocaine, cannabis, heroin and synthetic drugs.
