A defense council meeting was urgently called at the Elysee Palace on Thursday, focusing on issues including US threats to take control of Greenland and brutal repression in Iran.
France and several other European countries, including Germany, are mobilizing their armed forces in the autonomous Danish territory for a joint military exercise.
While Greenland's Deputy Prime Minister, Múte B. Egede, said more soldiers are expected in the coming days, accompanied by more flights and military ships as part of the hastily called operation against Trump.
But Trump's first public reaction, just hours after a high-stakes meeting between the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers and senior US officials, suggested he was far from convinced.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, he reiterated that Greenland was "very important" to US national security and "the problem is there's nothing Denmark can do about it if Russia or China want to invade Greenland, but there's everything we can do."
Meanwhile, the United States and Denmark are likely to reach a beneficial agreement, according to the US ambassador to Belgium, Bill White, who stressed President Donald Trump's commitment to NATO.
“I am confident that a productive framework of cooperation will be established between President Trump and the Danish Prime Minister, which will strengthen the security of Greenland,” he said in an interview on Bloomberg Radio. “And that is beneficial for NATO, Europe and the United States.”
His comments come after a meeting on Wednesday between the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland and the US Secretary of State and Vice President, which resulted in no progress.
Claiming that Greenland's "strategic military importance" cannot be underestimated, Bill White stated that some US security concerns were too sensitive to discuss publicly. He also suggested, in an interview with Bloomberg TV, that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen could benefit politically from the Greenland conflict with the United States in the run-up to the 2026 election.
"Some exchanges, even brief ones, with President Trump actually helped her win the election. We really want her to win this election," he said, adding that the US president was "NATO's biggest defender."
