Kiev: The fall of Syria shows that Russia cannot fight on two fronts!

One of the top international stories out of Ukraine today has been developments in Syria, where rebels have erupted to mount the fastest battlefield advance by either side since the rebellion against President Bashar al Assad turned into civil war 13 years ago. .

The Assad regime is widely considered to have survived thanks to significant military support from Russia. And Ukraine's foreign ministry has said the apparent capitulation of the Russian ally shows that Moscow is unable to sustain its involvement in multiple conflicts.

" We can see that Russia cannot fight on two fronts - this is clear from the events in Syria, " ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi told reporters at a weekly press conference.

Tykhyi was responding to a question about accusations by Iran, another Assad ally, that Ukraine was supporting what Tehran called terrorist groups.

" Ukraine categorically and resolutely rejects any accusation... of our alleged involvement in the deteriorating security situation in Syria ," the spokesman said.

Assad's government has been able to hold onto a significant portion of the country after years of fierce fighting. However, a week-long blitzkrieg offensive by the rebels has seen them capture two major cities and swathes of land.

"Russia's significant losses in Ukraine have caused Moscow to withdraw most of its troops and equipment from Syria, leaving its ally... without the necessary support ," Tykhyi said.
