Another major blow to international drug trafficking has been struck in Portugal. Portuguese police have seized nearly nine tons of cocaine from a semi-submarine seized in the Atlantic Ocean, near the Azores archipelago.
According to authorities, this is the largest amount of cocaine ever confiscated in the country.
The operation took place about 230 nautical miles off the Azores islands, with the involvement of the Portuguese navy and air force, as well as the support of British and American authorities, in difficult weather conditions.
During the operation, the vessel sank, and 35 of the approximately 300 packages of drugs it was carrying ended up at sea. However, police managed to recover approximately nine tons of cocaine, which is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of euros to criminal groups.
The submarine had come from Latin America and had four people on board, three Colombian citizens and one Venezuelan, who were arrested.
Portuguese authorities say drug trafficking off the country's coast has been on the rise in recent years. Last year alone, over 23 tons of narcotics were seized, while in March 2025, another submarine launched from Brazil, built specifically for drug transport, was seized.
