Rutte: NATO does not function without the US
Following tensions between the US and the EU over the Greenland issue, European rhetoric for a more independent Europe in defense has increased. But today, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte gave a blunt response to this idea: "Anyone who believes that Europe can defend itself without the United States is just dreaming."
In a speech before the Security and Foreign Affairs Committees in the European Parliament, Rutte stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin would like more than anything a Europe detached from NATO.
For Rutte, the transatlantic alliance is "vital" not only for Europe, but also for the US and Canada.
"The US needs NATO as much as its European partners," he said.
He also stressed that an independent European defense would require a dramatic increase in military spending, up to 10% of the GDP of European countries, an almost impossible target at the moment.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Rutte welcomed the EU's decision on a 90 billion euro aid package, calling it "crucial for the security and well-being of Ukraine."
However, he criticized European bureaucracy, calling for more flexibility in how these funds will be used.
Rutte stressed that the European defense industry is developing, but is currently "not able to meet Ukraine's immediate needs."
Meanwhile, Ukraine has a good military industry, but "without supplies from the US, it cannot stay at war."
In this context, Rutte's words, while realistic, were read by many as a condescension to Washington, especially at a time when Trump has signaled more isolation and pressure on European partners.
Between the rhetoric of a more sovereign EU and the reality of military dependence on America, it seems that Europe is not yet ready to stand on its own two feet.
