Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov nicknamed him a "worthless" general. Now, according to Russian media, top commander Alexander Lapin has been dismissed from the army. He will work in the civil service as an assistant to the head of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, a demotion apparently due to his failures in Ukraine.
Until October 2022, Lapin commanded the Russian Army Group Center in Ukraine.
However, after Lyman's withdrawal from the city, he was harshly criticized, with even Kadyrov accusing him of incompetence.
"If it had been up to me, I would have demoted Lapi to corporal, stripped him of his medals, and sent him to the front with a machine gun in his hand to wash away his shame with blood," he wrote.
However, Lapin continued his career. The general, originally from Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan, took command of the Leningrad Military District and commanded the "Northern" group in Ukraine and on the border. However, he lost this position in August of this year.
He was accused of facilitating the Ukrainian army's offensive in Kursk because, months earlier, he had dissolved an interagency council tasked with overseeing security in the region. However, Novaya Gazeta Europe sources believe that Lapin did not decide on the dissolution alone.
Lapin graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces in 2009. A career soldier, he served in Syria in 2017 and led Russian troops in the civil war-torn country from 2018 to 2019. In July 2022, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin awarded the general the title of “Hero of Russia.” But after that, his star quickly fell.
In Tatarstan, far from the front lines, Lapin will be responsible for caring for veterans and their families. Reports from the Russian news portal "Lenta" that Lapin resigned voluntarily due to his deteriorating health have not been officially confirmed.
