"We can't wait any longer, our reputation and credibility are at stake."
With this simple message on his social network Truth, Donald Trump ordered the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to expedite the indictments of his political opponents. A violation of the spirit of American law so blatant that the leader of the Democratic minority in the Senate, Charles Schumer, declared that this path leads to a dictatorship.
“This is the path that leads to dictatorship.” Hillary Clinton had a similar reaction.
But as is almost always the case with the president's challenges to the constitutional order, Republicans were silent, busy honoring the memory of Charlie Kirk, who himself had criticized the withholding of classified documents related to the "Epstein" case. On Friday, the head of the White House forced the resignation of the attorney general of the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert, because he had not filed charges against the New York State Attorney General, Letitia James, accused of loan fraud. James had accused Trump and won a civil lawsuit against him, for violating tax laws by his company, and now he is seeking revenge.
Siebert, appointed by the president himself, had refused to bring Letitia James to trial, having found insufficient evidence. He was also punished for not moving forward with the investigation into former FBI Director Comey. Moreover, during the confirmation process, he was supported by Democratic senators Warner and Kaine. In the end, Siebert resigned, not to violate the core principles of his profession, and Trump is now seeking to replace him with his former lawyer, Lindsey Halligan.
Trump claims he has the right to use justice against his opponents because, according to him, they have done the same thing to him – suing him five times. But he forgets that he has been criminally convicted in the case related to his relationship with adult film actress Stormy Daniels, while other investigations such as those into secret documents trafficked at Mar-a-Lago or the attack on Congress had solid grounds, but were stopped thanks to the conservative majority on the Supreme Court, which essentially placed him above the law. Trump had warned during the election campaign that his second term would be based on “revenge”, punishment and persecution of political opponents – and now he wants to act quickly. He will also act against former adviser John Bolton, whose home was raided by the FBI in search of secret documents, or against Democratic Senator Schiff, who he believes is guilty of organizing the impeachment process.
The American judicial system has an “original sin”: the prosecutors of the 93 federal districts are appointed by presidents and can be manipulated at will. They have usually tried to maintain impartiality, although John Kennedy appointed his brother Bob as Secretary of Justice and Nixon fired the special prosecutor who was investigating the Watergate affair. The management of the Ministry of Justice is part of the powers of the executive branch, which has the right to implement the program for which it was elected. But I do not remember any other president who has been so determined to use this power for his personal interests and to target the political opposition.
