The conclave to elect the new Pope begins on May 7th, what is expected to happen

The Vatican announced that the conclave to elect a new Pope will begin on May 7. During this time, contact with the outside world is strictly prohibited.

After the death of Pope Francis, a new Pope must be elected. The so-called conclave, from which the election will take place, is scheduled to begin on May 7. As announced by Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, the time until then will be used intensively by the cardinals in Rome.

The cardinals set the date in a closed-door meeting held after Francis' funeral. In just over a week, voting cardinals from around the world will gather in the Sistine Chapel for the conclave to elect a new pope.

In 2005 and 2013, the conclaves lasted two days each. During this time, contact with the outside world is strictly prohibited.

About 135 cardinals have the right to vote.

All cardinals who were under the age of 80 on the day of Pope Francis' death are eligible to vote. Of the 252 current cardinals, about 135 meet this criterion. How many of them will actually participate is still unclear.

With their votes, the cardinals decide not only the new religious leader of Catholics but also the course of the Church. Many cardinals have expressed their desire to continue to follow Francis' focus on working for people on the margins of society and for social justice.

But among conservatives there are some who want the church to follow more clearly the core teachings of Catholicism, which were also in focus under previous popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI./DW
