North Korea tried to show off its muscle by firing barrages of ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan
Japanese authorities reported that "suspected ballistic missiles" from North Korea flew near them.
This is the second missile test Pyongyang has carried out in a few days, and the launch came just hours before Americans head to the polls to elect a new president.
North Korea last week test-fired a missile it described as the most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile operating on solid fuel.
It was the first test carried out by Pyongyang since North Korea was accused of sending soldiers to help Russia in its war against Ukraine.
Pyongyang, which has denied the deployment, is under international pressure to withdraw troops from Russia, with Seoul warning on Tuesday that thousands of troops are being deployed to frontline areas, including in Kursk.
South Korea's military chief of staff said it detected the launch of "several short-range ballistic missiles at 7:30 a.m. local time that were launched toward the eastern waters of the Korean Peninsula."
The missiles flew about 400 kilometers and Seoul's military said it tracked in real time and shared information with Tokyo and Washington.
"In preparation for new releases, our army has strengthened surveillance and readiness," reports the Southern Cape.
Tokyo has also confirmed Pyongyang's latest test, and government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi said the North's "continued missile launches threaten the peace and security of our country".
On Sunday, South Korea, Japan and the United States conducted joint air drills involving US B-1B bombers, South Korean F-15K and KF-16 fighter jets and Japanese F-2 fighter jets in response to the missile launch. intercontinental ballistic missile from Pyongyang.
