The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNRWA) has announced that one in ten children screened at its clinics in Gaza since 2024 is suffering from malnutrition. According to UNRWA's director of communications, Juliette Touma, malnutrition rates have increased significantly, especially after the tightening of the siege on March 2, 2025.
Since January 2024, UNRWA has screened over 240,000 children under the age of five, revealing an alarming situation. “Before the war, acute malnutrition was almost unknown in Gaza.
"One nurse said she had only seen such cases in textbooks and documentaries," Touma said. The crisis has been exacerbated by shortages of medicine, food, hygiene materials and fuel, which are running out rapidly.
On May 19, 2025, Israel lifted an 11-week blockade, allowing limited aid deliveries from the UN, but the situation remains critical. UNRWA calls for urgent action to address the humanitarian crisis and secure supplies for affected children and families in Gaza.
