The attack of hundreds of rockets by Hamas on the most populated areas of Israel has called into question the air defense system of the Jewish state, which has invested billions of dollars there.
Dubbed the "Iron Dome", it was planned to protect local civilians from rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. And by October 7 it had performed very well, with a record of destroying 90 percent of the rockets that were aimed at Israel.
Israel's "Iron Dome" has been described as one of the most effective air defense systems on the planet.
It was designed to respond to short-range threats from Gaza and southern Lebanon and has intercepted thousands of rockets since becoming operational in 2011.
Israel's Defense Ministry says it is capable of dealing with multiple threats at once, with a success rate of up to 90 percent.
But the intensity of the rocket barrage from Hamas militants in its surprise attack on Saturday morning, October 7, managed to jam the system.
But how does the "Iron Dome" function?
The moment an enemy missile is launched, it is first the radar system that identifies and tracks it. Then a "control system" determines the counter-strike point and immediately launches a defensive missile to destroy the enemy's missile. The "Iron Dome" is programmed to ignore those missiles whose trajectory does not fall on populated areas.
Until now the pride of Israel's defense industry, the warranty on this system is being viewed with suspicion.
Only the United States of America has invested 2.6 billion dollars in it, which shows the extraordinary costs of creating and maintaining the "Iron Dome".
Israel has 10 'Iron Dome' batteries located throughout the country.
