As US President Donald Trump is presenting the "Peace Board" as a global initiative for resolving conflicts, from Gaza to Ukraine, rejections and skepticism from key European states are revealing the deep divisions within the transatlantic alliance.
In an interview with the BBC, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated categorically that the United Kingdom will not join the Peace Board, considering it unacceptable to include Vladimir Putin in a structure that talks about peace, while Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine. “ There is no signal that Putin is ready for peace. We cannot sit at the same table with such an aggressor ,” Cooper said.
The same position has been taken by France and Norway, which have expressed serious reservations about the legitimacy and real role of this board in relation to the United Nations. According to European diplomats, the creation of a parallel structure, with unclear authority and led by Trump permanently, is a dangerous precedent that could undermine the existing international order.
Italy, through Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has refused to participate in the signing ceremony in Davos, stressing that there may be constitutional and procedural problems that make Italy's membership impossible at this time.
Meanwhile, other countries such as China, Ireland and Ukraine have expressed strong skepticism, without giving a definitive answer. China has stressed its commitment to the international system with the UN at its center. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been clear: “ We cannot sit on the same board with Russia, which is our active enemy, and with Belarus, which supports it. ”
