The Prime Minister of Greenland has made it clear that sovereignty is a "red line" in any agreement.
Greenland's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, stated today that he was not sure what was concrete in the "framework" announced by US President Donald Trump for a future agreement on Greenland.
"No one other than Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark has the mandate to make agreements or arrangements regarding Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark without us ," Nielsen told CNN at a press conference in Nuuk.
Trump announced yesterday that he had reached the new "framework" after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Nielsen said he understood that at that meeting, Rutte "conveyed the message that we actually gave a few days ago with our representative from the Greenland government."
"I don't know what's specifically in that agreement, but I do know that we now have a high-level working group working on a solution for both sides," Nielsen said of Trump's new cadre.
Greenland's sovereignty and territorial integrity is a "red line," Nielsen continued. Earlier in the press conference, he told reporters that Greenland's position is clear.
"To sum up, we choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We choose the EU, we choose NATO. This is not just a situation for Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark, it is about the world order for all of us," Nielsen said.
