The blockade imposed by Israel has left over 2 million residents without basic supplies of food, water and electricity, causing a deep humanitarian crisis.
In a recent meeting, the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army (IDF), Eyal Zamir, clashed sharply with the far-right ministers, Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, regarding the treatment of the civilian population in Gaza.
Zamir stressed that the military is not sure how long it would take to evacuate civilians from Gaza City, warning that the humanitarian situation is much more complicated than it appears on the political stage.
But Finance Minister Smotrich has taken a tough stance, calling for a total blockade of Gaza: "We have ordered a quick operation. In my opinion, you can surround them. Those who do not evacuate, do not let them leave. Without water, without electricity, they can starve or surrender. This is what we want and you are capable of doing this," he declared.
Since October 2023, following a massive Hamas attack on Israel, the Israeli military has launched a massive ground and air offensive in the Gaza Strip. Thousands of Palestinians have lost their lives, while major cities, including Gaza City, have been reduced to complete ruins.
The blockade imposed by Israel has left over 2 million residents without basic supplies of food, water and electricity, causing a deep humanitarian crisis.
International organizations and the United Nations have made repeated calls for a halt to operations and the facilitation of humanitarian corridors, but so far Israel has refused to withdraw.
Netayah's Order
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the start of negotiations to release the remaining hostages and end the war in Gaza on terms acceptable to them. He told Israeli troops on Thursday night that his cabinet had also approved plans for a massive assault on Gaza City in the northern territory, despite widespread international and domestic opposition.
Hamas agreed on Monday to a proposal drafted by Qatari and Egyptian mediators for a 60-day ceasefire, which Qatar said would see the release of half of the remaining hostages in Gaza. But, responding for the first time, Netanyahu has not accepted the deal currently on the table, according to the BBC.
"I have come to approve the IDF's (Israel Defense Forces) plans to take control of Gaza City and defeat Hamas. These two issues - defeating Hamas and releasing all our hostages - go hand in hand," Netanyahu added, without giving details about what the next phase of the talks will involve.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed to destroy Gaza City if Hamas does not agree to disarm, release all remaining hostages in the territory, and end the war on Israel's terms.
"Soon, the gates of hell will open over the heads of Hamas murderers and rapists in Gaza until they accept Israel's conditions to end the war, mainly the release of all hostages and their disarmament," the minister wrote on social media.
"If they do not accept, Gaza, the capital of Hamas, will become Rafah and Beit Hanoun," he added.
