Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis today signaled the start of the process to revise the Constitution, adopted in 1975 after the fall of the military junta. Mitsotakis called for a bold revision of the constitution to respond to contemporary challenges.

The main changes proposed by his conservative government concern articles 16 and 86, which deal with non-public universities and ministerial responsibility, respectively.

Other proposals include a constitutional provision on the cost of party programs, sustainability in the civil service, the election of the President of the Republic, and the selection of the heads of the judicial system.

"I have been advocating the amendment of Article 86 for 20 years. My commitment to the fight against the deep state is equally clear. An efficient and citizen-friendly public administration must now be guided by continuous evaluation and must place the concept of sustainability in office on a completely new footing," said the Greek prime minister.

He added that the revision of the Constitution will include actions that will no longer allow the country to slide into populism.
