Iran says it has not received an "ultimatum" from the United States to accept a deal on its nuclear program, after US President Donald Trump threatened military action in the country.
Iran "always acts with sincerity and seriousness in diplomatic processes, but (our country) never accepts ultimatums. Therefore, this claim cannot be confirmed," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said at a press conference on Tuesday, international media reported.
Amid a strengthening of the US military presence near Iran, Trump told reporters last week that Tehran was "holding serious talks" with Washington, hours after Iran's top security official, Ali Larijani, told the Times newspaper that arrangements were being made for negotiations.
At the same time, on Friday, the US president stressed that he had set a deadline for Tehran, without providing further clarification, and added that Iran wants to "reach a deal."
Earlier today, Baghaei had noted that Iran expects a "framework" for negotiations with the US to be finalized "in the coming days" with the aim of reducing bilateral tensions.
"Countries in the region are acting as intermediaries for the exchange of messages," Baghaei noted. "We have raised various issues and are reviewing and finalizing the details of each stage of the diplomatic process, which we hope to complete in the coming days. This concerns the method and framework of work," he added.
Meanwhile, Tehran summoned European ambassadors following the EU's decision to declare the Revolutionary Guard a "terrorist organization."
"Yesterday and today, representatives of all EU member states that have embassies in Tehran were summoned to the Foreign Ministry," Baghaei explained.
"This is the minimum measure" before announcing further retaliation next week, he added.
