Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has faced a wave of criticism on social media after he chose not to attend Canada's first match at the 2026 World Cup, preferring to attend the opening ceremony of the United States' match, where his partner, the famous singer Katy Perry, performed.
Trudeau's decision sparked widespread public outrage in Canada, forcing the former prime minister to publicly apologize for his absence from the Canadian national team's game in a post on the X platform.
“Sometimes being a supporting partner calls you to duty,” Trudeau wrote, adding that his support for Canada remains unchanged. “But you know which team I’m rooting for to win the World Cup,” he added, captioning the message with a Canadian flag.
Canada drew 1-1 with Bosnia in its first match of the tournament, before the United States beat Paraguay 4-1 later in the evening. Before the match in Los Angeles, Katy Perry performed “Wonder,” from her 2024 album “143.”
During the ceremony and later in the stadium stands, cameras captured moments between Perry and Trudeau. The singer was seen greeting the former prime minister with a kiss after her performance, while during the game the couple appeared several times on giant screens following the challenge and enjoying the sporting atmosphere.
