Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the West of trying to undermine the stability of Russian domestic politics ahead of next year's presidential election.
Elections are scheduled to be held in March next year, with the eventual winner expected to be inaugurated two months later in May.
Vladimir Putin has not yet announced his intention to run, but this was also the case for the previous presidential election in 2018.
Putin has been president for 19 of the last 23 years in Russia.
For the four years he was not president since 2000, he served as the country's prime minister between 2008 and 2012, while his ally Dmitry Medvedev held the presidency.
