Critic of Putin under strict measures, the new trial against Navalny will start

A trial of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny is expected to begin on Monday, according to his lawyer. The trial will be held in the prison where he is currently held, northeast of Moscow.

Navalny has served two years of a preliminary sentence and faces new charges, which could carry up to 30 years in prison. He faces seven new charges, including founding and financing an extremist organization and downplaying Nazism.

The Kremlin critic rejects all the accusations and says they are politically motivated. The current trial started on June 6, but so far only procedural issues have been developed behind closed doors.

We recall that Navalny was poisoned together with the Novichok agent during a trip to Siberia in the summer of 2020. He has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's intelligence services of being behind the poisoning.

After receiving medical treatment in Germany, he returned to Russia where he was immediately arrested. According to international human rights organizations, Navalny is a political prisoner.
