The EU insists on a humanitarian cessation of hostilities in the Middle East.
"In the background of the humanitarian situation, a cessation of hostilities is definitely needed, even immediately," said EU Foreign Policy Commissioner Josep Borrell at the end of the meeting of the 27 EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
The representatives of the EU states had agreed on the statement made after the meeting the day before. But they stressed that the cessation of hostilities must be done "immediately".
According to them, it is necessary to create humanitarian corridors, so that aid can reach Gaza.
Borrell also stated that he will go to the Middle East in the next few days. Within the week he plans to go to Israel and the Palestinian territories as well as Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, Borrell said.
He will talk to leading politicians in the region about humanitarian aid and political issues.
Responsible Commissioner Janez Lenarcic was also present at the meeting of the council for foreign policy. According to his data, there is no more supply of water, food and medicine in Gaza.
The EU insists on the opening of humanitarian corridors, so that aid can reach the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, 40 trucks cross the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt every day. But this is very little, stressed Borrell. Before the war, 500 trucks a day passed. Now it is being considered that the aid will be transported by sea.
