Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, has said the Israeli army's war in the Gaza Strip could last "two to three months", vowing that "once it is over, there will be no more Hamas".
"As for the operational aspects of the maneuver, ultimately, nothing will stop the IDF. It's a mix of two things: our air capabilities and ground maneuvers," Gallant said Sunday in Tel Aviv.
A ground invasion of the Gaza Strip by Israel's military may be imminent, following a rampage by Hamas militants in southern Israeli cities two weeks ago. Israel's military surrounded Gaza and launched deadly retaliatory bombardments in Gaza immediately after the Oct. 7 attack, and has massed tanks and tens of thousands of troops near the border with the densely populated enclave of 2.3 million people.
" This should be our last maneuver operation in Gaza, for a simple reason, because after it, there will be no more Hamas there ," Gallant emphasized. Hamas militants breached border barriers and entered southern Israel from Gaza on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping more than 200 others. As a result, Israeli bombardment since then has killed 4,741 Palestinians and injured 15,898 in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.
