US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that Washington is prepared to retaliate if US troops are targeted during the Israel-Hamas war, as the possibility of the conflict spreading to the Middle East increases.
Blinken, speaking during an interview on NBC's Meet the Press, said he expects the war to escalate through the involvement of Iranian proxies, adding that US President Biden's administration is prepared to respond if US personnel are targeted by any such hostility.
"We are taking steps to ensure that we can effectively protect our people and respond decisively if we need to." Blinken said, noting that additional military assets were deployed to the Middle East, including two aircraft carrier battle groups.
Meanwhile, the White House has promised a continued flow of aid to Gaza, after a second convoy entered on Sunday and Israel continued to bombard the besieged enclave into the early hours of Monday.
US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed in a phone call that "there will now be a continued flow of critical aid into Gaza," the White House said, as a second convoy of 14 trucks entered Gaza through the Rafah crossing. .
The UN has warned that the volume of aid entering Gaza was only 4% of the daily average before the hostilities and a fraction of what was needed as stocks of food, water, medicine and fuel ran out.
