French President Emmanuel Macron said the US proposal for peace in Ukraine constitutes a valid basis, but stressed that it needs significant improvements. Speaking at the G20 summit in South Africa, Macron said that “all initiatives aimed at peace are good, but we need a solution that is acceptable to the Ukrainians.”
He warned that the current plan includes elements that directly affect European countries and NATO, and therefore cannot advance without their participation. According to Macron, the document has not been negotiated with Europe and should be reviewed, as happened last summer when key points on security and sovereignty were reformulated.
His comments reflect efforts by European countries to offer full support to Ukraine while maintaining diplomatic relations with the Donald Trump administration, which has released a 28-point peace plan in coordination with Russia.
Regarding the negotiations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held an extensive conversation with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, in an intensive day of diplomacy for Kiev. Zelenskyy said they discussed "many nuances of diplomatic work in planning the peace process" and that coordination between London and Kiev would continue.
He also confirmed that advisers from the UK, US, France, Germany and Ukraine will hold meetings in Switzerland focused on possible solutions to end the conflict.
After his conversation with Zelenskyy, Starmer also spoke with US President Donald Trump. According to Downing Street, the British prime minister briefed Trump on the discussions of the coalition of countries supporting a sustainable solution for Ukraine. The two leaders agreed that their teams would work together on the 28-point plan at tomorrow's meeting in Geneva and to hold another conversation the following day.
While Western diplomacy is intensifying, it remains unclear how extensively Ukrainian and European demands will be reflected in the final version of the American peace plan.
