Russia-Ukraine deal, Trump: Zelensky has lost Crimea, has no more cards to play

Trump accuses Zelensky of damaging the peace process with his stance on Crimea and says the Ukrainian president has "no cards to play."

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday rebuked Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky after he said Ukraine would not recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea, which he called an inflammatory statement that will make it more difficult to reach a peace deal with Russia.

"This statement is very damaging to peace negotiations with Russia," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

He said that Crimea was lost years ago "and is not up for discussion at any point."

"We are very close to a deal, but the man who has no cards to play now, finally, has to get it done," Trump added.

"I look forward to being able to help Ukraine and Russia get out of this complete and utter mess that would never have started if I were President!" Trump said.

The US President's reaction comes as a planned meeting on Wednesday between top US, British, French and Ukrainian diplomats to push forward a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine was cancelled at the last minute, while US Vice President JD Vance said the negotiations were reaching a moment of truth.

"We have issued a very clear proposal to both the Russians and the Ukrainians and it is time for them to either say 'yes' or the United States to walk away from this process," Vance told reporters during a visit to Agra, India.

He said it was "a very fair proposal" that would "freeze the territorial lines at a level close to where they are today," with both sides having to give up some of the territory they currently hold. He gave no further details of the proposal, the AP reported.

Ukraine said on Wednesday it was "committed" to Washington-led efforts to end the war with Russia after US Vice President JD Vance threatened to abandon negotiations if a deal was not reached soon.

"We stressed that we are committed to the peace efforts of US President Donald Trump," said Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak after talks in London with representatives of Kiev's allies, adding "we are grateful to our partners for their strong support and common desire to end the war as soon as possible." /Adapted from Pamphlet/
