More details are being reported from the Sydney massacre in Australia, where at least 16 people were killed and 40 others injured as a result of a terrorist attack. It all happened within 10 minutes, when a father and son, aged 50 and 24 respectively, opened fire on people who were on Australia's famous Bondi Beach, during the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah.
Among the victims was a 10-year-old girl, while four other children are being treated in hospital with injuries. Police also discovered "several" explosive devices on the beach, believed to be linked to the dead gunman, the 50-year-old father, while his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, 24, is being treated under observation in hospital.
Veteran lifeguard Jackson Doolan shared an update on social media, revealing that he and his colleagues rushed to the scene to rescue the victims of the shooting. Alongside a photo of himself running through the streets of Bondi in his lifeguard uniform, Doolan thanked those who responded to the horror.
On his Instagram story, Jackson wrote: "I appreciate the messages. I'm sure all the Coast Guardsmen are safe. Speechless... Congratulations to everyone who participated in the rescue."
Andy Reid, the other star of the film "Bondi Rescue", wrote on Instagram: "7pm yesterday in Bondi! Lifeguard: Jacko @jacksondoolan runs from Tamarama with medical equipment to support the lifeguards, club members, police, lifeguards and other everyday heroes who tried to save people during yesterday's terrible attack."
"I can't imagine what you've all seen and what you've all been through, but you are all the most amazing people. I'm grateful that we live in a world where you exist to show that good will always triumph over evil. Thank you."
Clin, also of Bondi Rescu, wrote for his part: "rescuing people is not a heroic act. Driving a jet ski in rough seas is not heroic. Resuscitation on sand is not heroic, that's our job."
"Running barefoot towards the fires with a trauma kit and first aid equipment is heroic. The lifeguards were absolutely the first on the scene, doing everything they could to help in a situation that could have very easily been life-threatening."
"I can't imagine what the affected families are going through and I extend my deepest condolences to everyone. What I can't forget is the incredible work that the Lifeguard staff do on the craziest beach in the world, day in and day out, without hesitation, without ego, and without delay. I am proud to be a lifeguard and honored to call these heroes, my friends. The photo is Jackson running from Tamarama to help. Let's stick together, take care of each other, live life to the fullest, and love each other," was another message on social media.
