Tragedy struck yesterday in the English Channel after an overloaded boat carrying migrants trying to reach Britain capsized, French authorities said today.
During the operation to rescue the immigrants who fell into the sea, "65 people were found safe and sound". However, following investigations, "a baby was found unconscious in the water and sadly pronounced dead," the Channel and North Sea Ports Authority said.
The event leads to at least 52 people having died trying to reach Britain through the English Channel so far this year. This is a record number since the beginning of 2018, when these makeshift crossings began.

As of September 3, half of the twelve shipwreck victims this year were minors. On October 5, a two-year-old child was killed when he was stepped on while on a damaged boat with 90 people. /protothema/
