The American president, Joe Biden, has called the killing of Yahya Sinwar a good day for Israel, for the United States and for the world.
The US president said in a statement that Sinwar was responsible for the "unspeakable savagery" in Israel on October 7 last year and as much for what followed.
" The Israeli military has relentlessly pursued Hamas leaders with the help of American intelligence, drawing them out of their hideouts and forcing them to flee," Biden said.
He did not specify whether the US provided intelligence that led to Sinwar's death, but added that his death proves that no terrorist in any country in the world can escape justice.
" For my Israeli friends, this is undoubtedly a day of relief and remembrance, similar to the scenes witnessed across the United States after President Obama ordered the raid to kill Osama bin Laden in 2011 ," Biden said, adding that Hamas was no longer able to carry out another October 7.
