"I'm sorry I don't have a plane," Trump says of tense

US President Donald Trump and his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa had a high-stakes meeting that was full of jokes and tensions.

Trump initially described the South African president as "controversial" in some circles, speaking of a "genocide" of white farmers in his country.

Welcoming Ramaphosa to the White House, Trump first said it was a "great honor" to be with the South African president, who is "really respected in some circles" but "less respected in others."

The US president said he has serious concerns about South Africa and he wants to discuss them with Ramaphosa.

"We have a lot of people who feel persecuted and come to the US. We accept (people) from a lot of (...) countries, if we feel there's persecution or genocide going on. Generally, they're white farmers and they're leaving South Africa and (...) it's sad to see that. But I hope we have an explanation for that, because I know you don't want it," he continued.

White House officials then aired videos that referred to allegations of genocide against African-Americans, the descendants of white settlers in South Africa. Ramaphosa remained silent throughout the footage, but later said that the white crosses appearing in some of the footage were "something I've never seen before." "I'd like to know where that is, because I've never seen" these videos before, he said.

The videos depicted dozens of cars transporting "entire families" of white farmers leaving their lands.

Trump persisted, showing him photocopies of reports referring to white South Africans and saying, "They're killing them."

The South African president assured that "this is not government policy" and that his government's policy is "the exact opposite" of what Trump describes. "There is crime in our country. The people who are being killed are not just white people," he stressed.

"You are a partner of South Africa and you raise some concerns. I am ready to talk to you about these concerns," he added.

"I'm sorry I don't have a plane to give you," Ramaphosa commented sarcastically.

"If you brought me a plane, I would take it," Trump replied.
