Mexico disobeys Trump, closes door to US military: We don't want any action

Mexico rules out using US military against drug cartels on its territory
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said a US military invasion was "absolutely ruled out" after reports that Donald Trump had secretly authorized military action against drug cartels on foreign soil.

Speaking during a press conference, Sheinbaum stressed that, while Mexico continues to cooperate with the US, "there will be no invasion" and any such action is not part of any agreement between the countries.

Her statement comes after a New York Times report revealed that former President Trump had signed a secret directive paving the way for the use of military force against cartels in Latin America.

According to the report, the directive gives the Pentagon the legal basis for direct operations, at sea and on foreign land, against drug organizations. Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order designating eight cartels as terrorist entities — including six Mexican ones.

Sheinbaum said Mexico had been notified of the decision regarding the classification of cartels, but not of any military involvement.

"We have always been clear: no military personnel on our territory," she said.

US officials, including Senator Marco Rubio, have supported the idea of treating the cartels as terrorist organizations, involving intelligence agencies and the military in the fight against them. Rubio said it is time for the US to change its approach to these groups.
