Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has admitted that during her government there were shortcomings in several important areas, especially in defense, climate and immigration.
Speaking in an interview, Merkel said Germany did not act with the speed needed to meet NATO's target for defense spending at 2% of GDP.
"When we look at it today, we were not fast enough," she said, acknowledging that although the defense budget increased during her years in government, the pace of increase was not sufficient. However, Merkel stressed that the decisions taken at the time were in line with the security situation that existed at the time.
She also admitted that results in climate policy were not at the necessary level.
"I can't say that we did as much as we needed to," said the former chancellor, who also spoke about delays in the digitalization process, acknowledging that Germany moved slowly in this direction.
On immigration, Merkel defended her government's policies, arguing that German authorities had achieved significant results in the face of the high influx of migrants. She also praised the role of the agreement between the European Union and Turkey in reducing the number of arrivals.
Asked about the current government's approach to immigration, Merkel reiterated her opposition to border controls, while praising the progress the European Union has made in cooperation between member states.
The former chancellor also admitted that her refugee policy contributed to the increase in support for the right-wing Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party.
