German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stressed that Germany will not participate in a war against Iran despite Trump's call. He stressed that there is no legal basis for Germany to become part of this war.
"We lack the mandate from the United Nations, the European Union or NATO required under the Basic Law. Therefore, from the beginning it was clear that this war is not a NATO matter."
"The United States of America and Israel did not consult us even before this war. As for Iran, there was never a joint decision on the 'if' of this issue. That is why the question of how Germany could be militarily involved here does not arise ," he told reporters.
Trump previously said he hoped the UK and others would send warships to help open the Strait and warned that if there was silence, it would have consequences for NATO.
"If there is no response or if it is a negative response, I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO ," Trump said.
