Macron's message: We must prepare, Putin threatens all of Europe

"We need reforms, we need to make choices and we need to be brave," Macron says.

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the French people on Wednesday, stressing that the world is now in a new era in terms of security.

He said that tomorrow, at the meeting with EU leaders, the doubling of the budget for armaments in Europe will be discussed, as according to him, EU countries must show that they are capable of defending the region.

"We are in a new era. Security has reached a point of uncertainty. Tomorrow we will have a meeting with the leaders of the European Union and the European Council, to make some decisions."

Things that France has been suggesting for years, like the military budget, which should be for all countries. We need to work to have a better army and industrialize our region. Tomorrow we need to talk from this perspective, because we need to face the truth.

"We must be sure that the countries of the European Union are capable of cooperating with each other. We must take action, starting with France. We must achieve a doubling of the arms budget by 2030," Macron said.

He quoted the words of Germany's incoming Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, who said last month that he wanted to discuss with France and Great Britain the possibility of extending their nuclear umbrella to cover his country.

Great Britain and France are the only two nuclear powers in Europe.

"We need reforms, we need to make choices and we need to be brave," Macron says.

"Merz has called for a strategic debate on providing the same protection to our European allies... whatever happens, the decision will be in the hands of the president of the Republic and the heads of the army," he said.

Macron also says he will hold a meeting of European military chiefs in Paris next week.

"We must prepare," continued French President Emmanuel Macron, as he reiterated his readiness to commit French troops as a possible peacekeeping force in Ukraine if a ceasefire is reached.

"I want to believe that the US will stand by us, but we must be ready for that not to be the case," he added.

Macron is looking ahead to tomorrow's European Council meeting, which Volodymyr Zelenskyy will attend, and says it is an excellent opportunity for the continent's nations to commit to rapidly increasing their defense spending.

"France must recognize its special status - we have the most efficient and effective military in Europe," he says, also noting that Paris has nuclear weapons to call upon if necessary.

Despite this, he says, it doesn't go far enough - so Macron now unveils new investments but doesn't outline how they will be spent, although he appears to refer to the defense sector.

"These are new investments that will allow us to mobilize private financing and public financing without raising taxes."

"We are entering a new era," Emmanuel Macron tells his compatriots in a televised address.

"If a country can invade its neighbor in Europe and remain unpunished, no one can be sure of anything. Beyond Ukraine, the Russian threat is real - it affects European countries," Macron said.

He also said that Russia is seeking to rearm and is increasing its defense spending.

President Putin is violating our borders to kill opponents, to manipulate elections.

He also mentions how Russia has broken previous promises and guarantees. It seems like the French president is preparing to make some kind of announcement.
