A shocking report was recently published by the UN Children's Agency, UNICEF. The number of migrants who died or went missing trying to cross the Mediterranean this summer was triple the number seen in the same period last year.
Between June and August, at least 990 people died or went missing on the dangerous central Mediterranean route between North Africa and Europe, compared with 334 deaths during the same months in 2022.
The agency did not give a specific number of children who died in the crossings, but said 11,600 unaccompanied minors were among migrants trying to reach Italy in makeshift boats between January and September, a 60% increase from the previous nine months. the first of 2022, foreign media write.
"The Mediterranean has become a graveyard for children and their future. The number of children who die seeking asylum and safety in Europe is the result of political choices and a flawed migration system," says UNICEF coordinator Regina De Dominicis.
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, 2,500 migrants died or went missing in the Mediterranean between January 1 and September 24, 50% more than in the same period last year.
