Minneapolis is going through one of the darkest moments in public safety in recent years. Before the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School today, the city had been rocked by three other shootings in just 12 hours, all of which were fatal. According to the Minneapolis Police Department, three people were killed and at least eight others were injured in those incidents.
“The level of gun violence across the city over the past day is deeply concerning,” the police said in a statement. “In three separate, multi-casualty shootings, we have recorded a large number of injuries and loss of life.”
The latest incident before the school shooting occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning, when one man was killed and another was injured in the city center at around 2:08 a.m. That brings the number of fatal incidents to four in less than a day — an alarming situation even for a city already known for its security and gun safety issues.
The hardest hit was the elementary school community of Annunciation Catholic School, an institution with a long history of religious and civic education for children, founded in 1923. The school, which had just started its school year on Monday, serves students from preschool through eighth grade. On its website, the school describes itself as a space where “education and faith coexist every day in our classrooms.”
But this Wednesday, these classrooms turned into crime scenes, striking at the heart of a community that believed that school was the safest place for children.
The waves of violence that have swept the city raise the alarm about the worsening public order situation and increase pressure on local authorities to take concrete measures. With four deadly shootings in less than 24 hours, Minneapolis is facing a security crisis that requires an immediate and comprehensive response.
