President Donald Trump has called a broad meeting in Washington today on the situation in the Gaza Strip, signaling a new effort to influence the course of the conflict that has crippled the region and the US's international image.
US Ambassador Steve Witkoff confirmed to Fox News that the meeting will be chaired by the President himself and that “a comprehensive plan for the day after the war in Gaza” will be presented. However, Witkoff did not provide details on the concrete content of this plan.
The meeting comes at a critical moment: Gaza is on the verge of a total humanitarian catastrophe, with images of starving children and destroyed infrastructure shocking global public opinion. According to international sources, the humanitarian situation has deteriorated significantly since April, while aid is almost blocked.
Trump, who during the 2024 campaign promised to quickly end the war in Gaza, took office with a two-month ceasefire, which was broken on March 18 after a series of Israeli attacks that left about 400 Palestinians dead.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar in Washington today, a signal that US-Israeli coordination on the continuation of operations is still active.
But the question that arises is: Is Trump trying to restore the US's image as a peace broker, or is he preparing a political plan to shift attention away from criticism of the lack of action during the first months of his term?
