Thousands of anti-Hezbollah leaflets were dropped from the air over the Lebanese capital, Beirut, filling the sky for several minutes and then falling onto the city's streets, CNN reported, citing Lebanese military sources.
According to the Lebanese Army Command, the leaflets were dropped by an Israeli aircraft and contained a message from Unit 504, an Israeli army human intelligence unit that deals with recruiting informants.
Lebanese military authorities announced that the leaflets also included QR codes linking to WhatsApp and Facebook pages. The military warned citizens not to scan these codes or click on the relevant links, stressing that this could pose legal and security risks, as well as the possibility of phones being hacked and personal data being accessed.
Photos shared on social media show the message on the leaflet reads:
"Your land is yours, do not let it become easy prey for the weapons of Iran-backed Hezbollah. Unit 504 is working to secure the future of Lebanon and its people, believing in the principle: 'If your neighbor is well, you are well.'"
Asked by CNN whether Israel was behind the leaflets being dropped over Beirut, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) declined to comment. The Israeli military has used similar propaganda methods in other conflict zones, including Gaza, before.
