Bad weather hit the Romagna region. The rain particularly affected the provinces of Ravenna, Rimini and Forlì-Cesena, causing the interruption of rail traffic on the Rimini-Ferrara line between Rimini and Igea Marina.
Firefighters were also deployed on the Ravenna-Rimini line because a fallen tree forced a train to stop, with 23 people on board forced to evacuate.
In the Rimini area, firefighters responded to approximately 80 incidents, with emergency teams also working from the Forlì-Cesena command.
"A violent storm of extraordinary intensity hit Romagna during the night: a real marine supercell, that is, a storm core that regenerates itself when it brings moisture from the (warm) sea.
And Rimini is experiencing major disturbances, with the supercell that was loaded from Ravenna to Rimini, where it caused a total cumulative rainfall of 74 millimeters, with 30/50 millimeters in about 20 minutes, strong winds on the coast and hail," a statement from the Rimini municipal administration said.
Similar problems were reported in Cesenatico, with trees falling on power lines, roads and a campsite. Flooding was also reported in underpasses and underground garages, but again, no injuries were reported.
In the Cervia and Milano Marittima areas, strong winds have damaged beaches, causing roofs to fall or collapse. The mayor of Cervia, Mattia Missirol, has issued a warning to residents and tourists, urging them to show "maximum caution when traveling" and assuring them that "the area is being monitored". An order from the mayor has opened the Municipal Operations Center and entry to pine forests and tree parks has been prohibited.
At Milan's Malpensa Airport, several departing and arriving flights were cancelled at dawn due to strong winds and high-altitude hail.
