NATO and Ukraine will hold emergency talks on Tuesday after Russia attacked the city of Dnipro with an experimental hypersonic ballistic missile that escalated the nearly 33-month war.
The conflict is "entering a decisive phase" and "taking on very dramatic dimensions", said the Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, on Friday.
Ukraine's parliament canceled a session as security was tightened following Thursday's Russian attack on a military facility in the city of Dnipro.
In a stark warning to the West, President Vladimir Putin said in a nationally televised address that the Oreshnik medium-range missile attack was in retaliation for Kiev's use of longer-range US and British missiles capable of to strike deeper into Russian territory.
Putin said Western air defense systems would be powerless against the new Russian missile.
Ukrainian military officials said the missile that hit the city of Dnipro had reached a speed of 13,000 kilometers per hour and had six non-nuclear warheads.
Speaking to military industry officials on Friday, Russian President Putin said Russia is starting production of Oreshnik missiles.
"No one in the world has such weapons," he said. "Sooner or later other countries will also provide them. We are aware that they are under development."
But he added, “we have this system now. And that's important."
Testing of the missile will continue, "including in combat, depending on the situation and the nature of the security threats posed to Russia", Mr Putin said, noting that there is "a stockpile of such systems ready for use".
Although it is not an intercontinental missile, Putin said it has a destructive effect similar to that of strategic or nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský arrived for a visit to Kiev. He posted a photo from the Kiev railway station on the X social network on Friday morning.
"I want to get to know the situation of the Ukrainians in the face of the bombings, the progress of Czech projects on the ground and how to better use international aid in the coming months," said Minister Lipavský.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office continued to work in accordance with standard security measures, a spokesman said.
Russia on Thursday launched a new medium-range ballistic missile in response to Kiev's use of longer-range missiles sent by the US and Britain from Kiev, capable of striking deeper into Russian territory, it said. Russian President Vladimir Putin in a speech on Thursday.
The Pentagon confirmed that the Russian missile was a new, experimental type of medium-range missile based on the RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile.
