Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has pledged to protect businesses that will be hit by US President Donald Trump's tariffs.
Meloni faces a serious diplomatic balancing act as an ally of Trump, while also having to protect Italy's export sector, which will suffer from the imposition of 20% tariffs on European goods imported into the US.
"Of course we do not agree with the US decision, but we are ready to develop all the tools, both at the negotiation level and financially, that are necessary to support businesses and sectors that may be affected," Meloni said in a video message.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was under pressure from Italy's EU partners to "pick a side" in the transatlantic trade war, as she has an effective veto, like several major member states, for Brussels to react harshly against US tariffs.
