Crisis in Serbia, Vučić presents candidate for Prime Minister today

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is expected to propose the name of the candidate for prime minister today. The news was confirmed by a statement from the Presidency to the media.

"Based on constitutional powers, the President of the Republic will propose a candidate for Prime Minister to the National Assembly, after hearing the opinions of the representatives of the selected electoral lists," the Presidency announced.

The deadline for electing a new government in the National Assembly expires on April 18 at midnight.

Meanwhile, Vučić said last week that the formation of the new government aims to compensate for everything that has happened during these months.

"I did not want to have a decisive influence, except to tell them what the important tasks before the next government are, what that government should do, how much it should do, how much should be compensated for everything we lost in the months of terror," Vučić said.

He emphasized that "we must return security to our homes, children to schools, and Serbia must return to the path of success and victories that we have had countless times in the past years."

Serbian authorities have faced a series of protests since November last year, when a roof collapse at the Novi Sad railway station killed 15 people. Many citizens blame corruption for the tragedy, after Vučić inaugurated renovations of the station in 2022.

Protesters are demanding accountability for the tragedy in Novi Sad and transparency from institutions. So far, over ten people have been charged with the roof collapse.

After protests spread across the country, Prime Minister Miloš Vučević resigned, forcing Vučić's party to move towards forming a new government.
