Marco Rubio and Kaja Kallas debate highlights distrust among allies over approach to Ukraine war

According to the American media outlet Axios, the G7 foreign ministers' meeting was marked by strong tensions over the West's stance on Russia and the war in Ukraine. The clash between the United States and the European Union reflected a growing climate of distrust among the allies.

The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, directly asked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for a clear deadline for when Washington would toughen its stance towards Moscow. She recalled that a year ago the US had warned of stronger measures if Russia did not cooperate, stressing that so far there have been no concrete changes.

According to diplomatic sources cited by Axios, Rubio reacted in harsh tones, stating that the US is doing its utmost to end the war. He added that if European countries believe they can manage the situation better, they can act on their own, hinting at the possibility of greater distance from Washington.

Rubio also stressed that the US is maintaining contact with both sides and continues to support Ukraine with military assistance and information.

After the debate, several European ministers intervened to defuse tensions and emphasize the importance of continuing diplomatic efforts with the participation of the U.S. At the end of the meeting, Kallas and Rubio held a brief private conversation to calm the situation.

The American side downplayed the incident, describing it as a sincere exchange of views. Rubio himself stated to the media that there had been no tensions and that such meetings are characterized by cooperation and mutual respect.

Meanwhile, European capitals have long expressed reservations about the U.S. role in peace efforts between Ukraine and Russia. The crisis in the Middle East and Washington's growing focus on Iran have added to concerns that the Ukraine issue could receive less attention, at a time when diplomatic progress remains limited.
