Turkish President Erdogan receives Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis in Ankara

Three years ago, relations between Greece and Turkey went through a tense phase, with clashes in the Aegean and on the Evros border over the issue of migration, while political rhetoric was harsh.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who constantly shouted "Mitsotakis down", has now reached the point where he calls Kyriakos Mitsotakis "my dear friend", and yesterday's reception in Ankara showed this.

The Turkish president called Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis "my dear friend" during joint statements, while a welcome banner for the head of the Greek government was placed in the center of the Turkish capital.

The visit took place in a carefully organized atmosphere. The two leaders signed a joint statement in which they agreed to maintain communication channels and mechanisms for reducing tensions at all levels, with the aim of preventing disputes from turning into crises. Both sides acknowledge that they do not intend to further complicate the bilateral agenda in an unstable international environment.

According to Protothema.gr, in the face-to-face meeting that lasted about 90 minutes, the parties discussed all open issues. The topics of the Aegean, maritime spatial planning, marine parks, NAVTEX and from the Turkish side the issue of SAFE were put on the table. The message that emerged from the meeting emphasizes the possibility of addressing divergences through dialogue without creating tension.

The Turkish president mentioned that disputes can be resolved on the basis of international law, also referring to the principles of good neighborliness. At the press conference, the two leaders stuck to prepared statements and there were no questions from journalists.

The Supreme Cooperation Council was held in a balanced climate. The ministers discussed concrete areas of cooperation and some of them agreed to mutual visits in the coming months. Greek Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos and Turkish Industry Minister Mehmet Fethi Şehir planned exchange visits to Athens and Ankara. Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis and his counterpart Mehmet Şimşek discussed the organization of two business forums in Istanbul and Athens, with the aim of bringing bilateral trade to the level of 10 billion dollars.

The visit concluded with a dinner hosted by President Erdogan, attended by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and business representatives from both countries. The talks at the table focused more on general issues and international commitments than on the sensitive topics on the agenda.

The next meeting between the two leaders is expected to take place within the framework of the NATO summit on July 7 and 8 in Ankara, where Turkey plays the role of host country.
