The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned of a serious escalation of violence by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, after a Palestinian child was killed in a settler-linked attack near Ramallah.
According to the OCHA report, Wednesday's incident in the Ramallah area involved settlers allegedly stealing around 700 heads of livestock from Palestinian residents, while forcing at least two families to forcibly leave their homes.
The UN agency says it documented more than 800 attacks by Israeli settlers in 2026, affecting 220 Palestinian communities. This figure represents a significant increase compared to previous periods.
Between May 5 and 11 alone, around 70 Palestinians, including 10 children, were injured by Israeli forces or settlers. The majority of the injuries occurred during Israeli military raids and settler attacks on Palestinian villages.
"Settler violence is escalating across the occupied Palestinian territory, creating persistent fear and insecurity among Palestinian communities ," the OCHA report said.
Settler attacks often include burning homes, cutting down olive trees, stealing livestock, and direct physical attacks on Palestinian civilians. Many of these incidents occur in the presence or with the tacit support of Israeli forces, according to testimonies from residents and human rights organizations.
This latest UN report comes at a time when tensions in the West Bank are high, with violence increasing since the attacks of October 7, 2023. Israeli settlers, supported by the far-right Israeli government, have intensified actions to expand settlements that are illegal under international law.
There has been no official reaction from Israeli authorities yet to the latest incident in the Ramallah area.
