US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Chinese leader Xi Jinping had promised him during talks that China would not provide military equipment to Iran.
"He said he wouldn't give them military equipment. That's an important statement. He said that today. He said that forcefully," Trump said.
The US president made the statement during an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity. Trump added that Xi Jinping also stressed the importance of economic ties between China and Iran, particularly oil purchases.
" China buys a lot of its oil from Iran... they would like to continue to do that," Trump quoted Xi Jinping as saying.
Trump reiterated that Xi expressed his desire for the Strait of Hormuz to be fully reopened.
" He joked, he said, 'you know, they stopped it, then you stopped them, '" Trump recounted the conversation with the Chinese leader.
According to Trump, Xi Jinping also expressed disappointment over reports that Iran was imposing tariffs on ships passing through the strait.
Trump's statements come at a time of high tension in the Middle East, where the Strait of Hormuz has been at the center of clashes and concerns about the security of international trade.
