UN warns of 'catastrophe' from e-waste: Recycling cannot cope with the

The United Nations warned that the waste caused by electronic devices is creating an environmental disaster.

According to a joint report of the International Telecommunication Union of the UN and the UNITAR research unit, recycling cannot cope on a large scale with the large amounts of electronic waste that are created, which include mobile phones, computers, televisions and other devices that consumers throw away.

82 million tons of e-waste by 2030

The UN report states that in 2022 about 62 million tons of electronic waste were created, and that by 2030 this figure could reach 82 million tons.

The UN says that 45,000 tons of harmful plastics are generated from unrecycled electronic waste and 58 tons of mercury are released into the environment every year.

The UN report states that in 2022, only 22% of the mass of e-waste was properly collected and recycled. Much of this waste is incinerated, landfilled, or recycled inappropriately.

On average, every inhabitant of the Earth generates about 7.8 kilograms of electronic waste every year.

Problem for developing countries

A significant part of the electronic waste generated by the wealthiest countries is sent for recycling or disposal in developing countries.

In developing countries, where workers often lack the proper equipment and are exposed to harmful substances, about 18 million tons of e-waste are processed.

The report also talks about the challenges expected from the transition to cleaner energy sources due to the need to dispose of batteries, heat pumps and solar panels./DW
