A Civil Guard agent in Spain lost his life on Sunday in the port of Granadilla de Abona, in Tenerife, during an operation related to the tourist ship "Hondius", where a hantavirus outbreak had been identified.

According to information published by the Jucil Nacional union on the social network X, the 62-year-old officer was on standby at the command operations center when he suffered a heart attack.

Medical teams attempted to revive him for about 40 minutes, but the intervention was unsuccessful.

"The officer, while at the operational command post, suffered a heart attack. Despite 40 minutes of resuscitation efforts, his life could not be saved,"  the statement said.

The operation at the port concerned the disembarkation and repatriation of passengers from the ship "Hondius", following reported cases of hantavirus on board.

In its response, the Civil Guard union also recalled recent losses in the ranks of the force. On May 8, two agents lost their lives off the coast of Huelva while pursuing a boat used by drug traffickers, after two gendarmerie naval vessels collided.

Another serious incident was recorded in February 2024 in Barbate, in the province of Cádiz, where two more officers were killed during an operation against drug trafficking.
