Despite the fact that the Belarusian government led by Alexander Lukashenko expressed its support for Putin, against the uprising of the Wagner group, the country's opposition seems to have another idea.
Triggered by the turbulent situation inside Russia, the Belarusian opposition has called on the country's military to assert its independence and finally break away from the Kremlin's influence.
Valery Sakhashchyk, a member of the opposition cabinet led by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, called on the Belarusian army to unite to "save the country".
" I want to address the Belarusian army. We have no one to rely on, but we, united, will definitely face this. We will have time to ask each other questions and complain. Let's not do it now. Let's unite the nation, save the homeland, everything else, later ," he said in a video speech from Ukraine.
Prominent Belarusian military man Sakhashchyk, who is currently in Ukraine, accused President Lukashenko of leading the country to a dead end and said Belarusians must now decide what to do next.
He added that this moment should be used for Belarus to become an independent European country, or else with the increased Russian influence, the Republic of Belarus, according to him, will remain only in the books.
" Either we will use this historic chance and become a prosperous European country, or we will lose everything and the very name of the Republic of Belarus will remain only in the books ," Sakhashchyk said.
