Orban "blocks" the expansion of the Alliance: the ratification of

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban told his country's parliament on Monday that ratifying Sweden's NATO membership is not "urgent", accusing the Nordic country of defying the country's "democratic nature".

Hungary has yet to vote on Sweden's admission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), joining Turkey, which had long blocked Sweden's membership in the alliance before lifting its veto in July.

In the past, Orban has repeatedly stated that Hungary supports Sweden in its aspiration to join NATO.

"I wonder if there is something urgent that forces us to ratify Sweden's membership in NATO. I don't see any such circumstances," Orban told lawmakers on September 25.

Orban backed up his statements by saying that "there is no risk to Sweden's security" and no military relationship with Sweden is at risk.

Budapest often condemns what it calls "hostile behavior" by Stockholm, accusing Swedish representatives of "constantly attacking Hungary" on issues related to the rule of law.

In the last few weeks, a video from 2019 has been circulating, showing criticism of the decline of democracy in Hungary.

"Serious accusations and false information are spreading in Sweden's schools," said Hungarian top diplomat Peter Szijjarto in a letter he sent to his Swedish counterpart earlier in September.

The resurfaced video of Hungary being shown in schools "exacerbates the problem... at the level of international politics and we will not accept that," Orban said on Monday.

Helsinki and Stockholm - which for years had a policy of military non-commitment - after the launch of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last February, expressed their desire to join NATO. In April, Finland became the 31st member of NATO./ REL
