Pope Francis will resign, Vatican denies rumors: Useless speculation!

The Vatican said in a statement that "the Pope is resting well" in the latest update on the health of the Pope, who has been hospitalized for nine days at Rome's Gemelli hospital due to bilateral pneumonia.

But on Friday, Professor Sergio Alfieri, who is part of the Pope's medical team, warned that he is "not out of danger" and will remain in hospital for at least another week.

"The Pope has always wanted us to tell the truth," Alfieri told reporters at the entrance to the Gemelli hospital. "The chronic disease remains, the Pope knows this, he said, 'You understand that the situation is serious.'"

The Vatican said in a statement on Saturday that Pope Francis will no longer lead Sunday prayers this weekend, the second week in a row that he has had to cancel his personal appearance.

As Pope Francis' health condition becomes increasingly worrisome, rumors of his imminent resignation have grown increasingly intense.

"It all seems to me like idle speculation. Now we are thinking about the health of the Holy Father, his recovery, his return to the Vatican: these are the only things that matter," said Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

"Thank God, the news coming from Gemelli is encouraging, he is recovering. The documents have been sent to him and this means that he is doing well," Parolin said.

Pope Francis, 88, has suffered from bouts of ill health for years and as a young man had the upper lobe of his right lung removed. But the Vatican says he is in good health, has eaten breakfast every day and has continued to work from his hospital room.
